Southern Africa Weather Overview

From one of South Africa’s most trusted Weather Forecasters, Mike J Berridge here is Mike’s overview for today.

OVERVIEW FOR SATURDAY 16 NOVEMBER:

The Low pressure disturbance “LC” is pulling a narrow stream of humid Equatorial air down the Mozambique Channel and across the island of Madagascar. The humid air forms a front marked “ITCZ” which stands for ‘Inter-tropical Convergence Zone’ (yellow frontal line). This type of front often becomes very unstable. Today it will cause patches of heavy rain and thunderstorms for Madagascar and the southern Channel as shown with pink shading. Darker pink denotes the heavier rain areas.

Weather Overview by Mike Berridge

Thunder showers are also shown for central Mozambique and north-east Zimbabwe, with scattered thunder showers for Zambia. The moisture for this is generally coming as a humid northwester from the Congo in the north.

The western side of the Low is pulling in dry stable air from the west or south-west.

South of the Cape there is a High pressure ridge growing out from the Atlantic High “HA2”. This will send light rain against the southern Cape coastal region which will be persistent, and tomorrow (Sunday) will spread inland in patches together with the cool air which will follow as the front heads in a north-easterly direction to restore clouds and rain for the eastern regions (eg KZN)..
